Welcome Back to Room 7 for 2019

Image
Hi everyone Welcome back to school.  It's been lovely seeing those familiar faces and getting to know new ones in our class. Mrs Farley and Miss Flaherty are the teachers in Room 7 this year. We hope everyone enjoyed their break and are looking forward to sharing their learning this year. Once all of our students have returned their Responsible User Agreements signed and devices have been set up ( this can take some time, so please bear with us) the children will continue to use the blog they set up last year (year 6s) or will set up a new blog (year 5s) this year to share their writing. We look forward to continuing the great start to the year. We have a meet the teacher evening on Wednesday 27 February from 6pm - 7pm.  A letter will come out closer to the time.  We will give you a brief overview of Literacy and Numeracy in our team, then you will have the opportunity to meet your child's teacher and have an informal chat if you wish to.  We will be ...

KiwiCan Term 2 Week 2

Image
Integrity Today in KiwiCan we continued our discussions around Integrity. We started with a warm up called Backwards where you had to do the opposite of the command given (Jump, Move, Stop and Clap). It made our brains hurt but was a fun way to practise integrity when we got it wrong. We also got to go outside and do a relay race that was testing our judgement on good and bad choices. Our discussion question was: How can you tell the difference between a good choice and a bad choice? We think that when you make a bad choice it not only can make others feel bad, but you get a bad feeling yourself when you know you haven't made the right choice.  There are some questions you can ask yourself if you are trying to decide whether a choice is good or bad.  How is this going to make me feel? Proud, Sad, Guilty, Excited, Brave, Disappointed, Nervous. How is this going to make others feel?   How would my mother/grandmother feel if they could see the choi...

KiwiCan Term 2 Week 1

Image
How do you show integrity each day? Term 2 has started and so has our new KiwiCan theme of Integrity. Some of us weren't 100% sure about what integrity meant, but after today we had a better idea. Our Fruit Salad energiser was heaps of fun and helped us see the way that we can show integrity when we play games. When we just focus on ourselves and not others we can ensure that we play fair and honestly, and if we got it wrong we sat out. We discussed what a good choice was compared to a bad choice. As an example we mentioned standing up for ourselves and others like if someone is being bullied we don't just sit back but we say something to help the situation. A bad choice would be stealing a chocolate bar but we could still show integrity by deciding to fix the situation and take it back to wherever we got it from. We then did an activity called Air Rescue which was similar to tag but involved more teamwork, and also meant we needed to show integrity by being hone...

Getting Cash Wise with ASB

Image
Today we had Marlon come and visit us from the ASB Get Wise programme. He was at Papatoetoe West Primary to teach us all about how to be smart with money (even at our age!). First off he taught us about goal setting! So what is a CASH Goal? Read more to find out! C - Clear goal (make it personal) e.g. Buying a $300 bike A - Actions (we're not going to ask for money!). How can we train our brain to EARN the money we need. What can we do at our age to earn money? We brainstormed some ideas. E.g. doing chores around the house (doesn't need to be much, could even be $2 a week), sell something like a lemonade stand, garage sale (get all of your old stuff to sell), jobs around the neighbourhood (e.g. a paper run), use competitions and more. Have to work to earn money! Not going to be easy. S - Saving! Save money in a bank account and the bank gives you Free money!? (called Interest). If you keep your money in a money box or in a bed it might get lost (or you decide to spen...

WonderHub Opening - Book Parade

Image
On Friday the 23rd March our school opened the brand new WonderHub! This is our new library space which has been renovated over the last few months. We were all very excited to see our new space where we would be able to continue our love of books, but also try new things and expand our view of the world around us. Room 3 - Gangsta Granny's! To celebrate our new WonderHub we held a book parade where every single class dressed up as characters from books and paraded around our top court area. In Room 7 everyone spent the week either creating a comic book costume, or a costume related to a fairy tale. We had spent the last few days very busy crafting everything from hand! On Friday morning it was a crazy rush to get everyone ready - and our room was definitely the messiest it has ever been! Maui and the Sun! What a creative artwork. We lined up outside Room 1 and admired every class as they walked by. There was Maui, Slinky Malinki, Rainbow Fish, Harry Potters, Superhero...

KiwiCan

Image
Every week on a Monday we get to enjoy a KiwiCan session with some of our favourite people; Mr Matau and Miss Falanitama. They are always full of energy and give us a lesson that focuses on values like Respect, Resilience, Positive Relationships, Integrity. Yesterday we were focusing on leadership skills. Some of the things it takes to be a good leader are: Listening Leadership without being bossy Respect for others Integrity Encouraging Having a go at things Challenging ourselves In our discussion we talked about why it was important for us to have a go, and why it was important to encourage other people to have a go as well.  Our energiser was a really fun game called Super Duper. You can play it by starting off as an old man or woman and then playing paper, scissors, rock against other old men/women. If you win you become a rabbit and then have to compete against other rabbits. The level above rabbits is snakes, and then final level is super hero. There were ac...
